Fight Ends In Death
As I’m sure everyone knows, there was a fight Saturday morning (Friday night) that lead to the death of one man, Orlando Clark, and the hospitalization of another man, Antonio Pugh. The Carbondale Police Department released this statement:
On November 20, 2010 at approximately 1:30 a.m., the City of Carbondale Police Department responded to a report of a large crowd fighting in the 100 block of South University. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Orlando Lamont Clark, 34, a Carbondale resident, had been seriously injured during the fight. Clark was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where he later succumbed to his wounds. Officers were also notified that Antonio Pugh, 28, a Carbondale resident, was at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale being treated for injuries he sustained during the same incident.
Two suspects are in custody and the investigation continues. Should any further information become available it will be released Monday, November 22, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact the police department at 457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 549-COPS (2677). Steel up at the New Police Station
Work is moving ahead on the new police station on the old Lincoln School site. The foundation is in place and some of the steel beams are up.
The drawings for the building look pretty attractive. Check them out on the city’s website.
The building itself cost $7.02 million, but the city issued bonds for $8 million to furnish the building and cover unexpected expenses.
The Police Department is currently housed in some converted dorms on East College. The new facility is centrally located and will be earthquake resistant.
The city also recently bought the eastern portion of the old Lincoln School site. The plan is to keep that area as a park. I haven’t heard what the new park will be called or what the design will be.
Lincoln Street forms the eastern boundary of the site, so I suggest Lincoln Square for the name. The people in charge of naming the park are welcome to use that name without giving me credit.
The area is already set up for softball and basketball. Adding some benches, landscaping, and restrooms would really spruce it up.
Comments are welcome.
